Storage and Organization Guide

If you have a single room or share one, space is a commodity. Barracks and Dorm rooms are tight. But with some creative packing and storing containers, you will be good to go.

The rooms are meant for sleeping, and with little space for much else. But with smart planning, you can still have a space to unwind in.

Either with a roommate or not, I would recommend that you cut your room in half. Sleeping and entertainment. Carefully arranging your closets could act as a wall. In the non-sleeping portion, you may be able to fit a small couch and television so you can stream something in your downtime.

This guide will show you tips to prepare yourself before you move in or if you already live the life. I will also give you my top picks that you should consider for your barracks or dorm.

  • Use vertical space whenever possible. Take advantage of small spaces that would normally go unused. Two closets squeezed together with a small space in between, instead of wasted space, you now have a spot to hang your uniform.

  • If yours allows for under-bed storage, this is prime real estate. If you can keep storage crates and shoes under your bed and out of sight would be great. The less visible clutter you have, the better.

  • Choose a collapsible or stackable bin to minimize your extra storage when you don’t need it. If your only options are non-stackable bins that you can not easily store. Try to get ones that cold doubles as a stand or small table.

  • Keep frequently used items accessible and get rid of or don’t bring items you use little. Think, if you don’t use it once a week, ask yourself if you really need it.

  • Take advantage of the space even within your closets. Stackable hangers to give yourself more hanging space. If there is enough space under your hanging items, consider storing your bins. For your underclothes, consider rolling instead of folding, and take advantage of unused space in shoes, boots, and hats.

  • For your gear, if you keep it in your room and not a unit locker. Stack your vest around your helm with its hollow side up to serve as a makeshift container that you could put items into.
