Your barracks cleaning and maintenance guide. Tips & Products to help you navigate life while living in the barracks.

Routine inspections are part of life. Having the right basic cleaning setup keeps you ready without scrambling. Keeping your room clean and tidy is half the battle while living in the barracks. With the right products and a little bit of time, you will easily be able to maintain a clean room.

The last thing you need is your command harping on you because you left your trash out, unorganized clutter, or the dust bunnies starting an illicit gambling ring under your desk.

This guide will show you tips to prepare yourself before you move in or if you already live in the barracks. I will also give you my top picks that you should consider for your barracks or dorm.

  • Keep a small cleaning kit stored together. This doesn’t need to take over your closet. There are plenty of compact sweepers out there. I would avoid the traditional mop and bucket; these are clunky and take up a lot of space. Get a jet sweeper; it will do the same thing for your small room. Collapse and put away when not in use.

  • Use multi-surface cleaners. No need to buy out the cleaning aisle at your local store. One cleaner will be plenty for most needs. My personal favorite has always been Simple Green and Goo-Gone. They’re safe and effective products, and Goo-Gone smells like oranges, which is pretty cool if you like oranges.

  • Microfiber cloths over paper towels. Paper may seem like a cheaper item, but it’s not. Of course, a roll tucked in your closet somewhere, but cloth is where it’s at. Reusable, washable, and they don’t take up much space.

  • I recommend that before you go to bed and before you leave for PT in the morning to make sure your room is tidy. Trash has been thrown out, the bed made, and all your closets are secured. Inspections happen all the time and at unpredictable times.
